MacBook vs Windows Laptop in Kenya 2026: Which Fits Your Work and Budget?
Choosing between a MacBook and a Windows laptop? Here is an honest, practical comparison based on the software you use, your budget and how you work.

On this page
MacBook or Windows? It is one of the most common questions we hear in our Nairobi shop. Both are excellent, but they suit different people. The right choice depends less on which is “better” and more on the software you need, how you work and your budget.
Quick Answer: Should You Buy a MacBook or a Windows Laptop?
Choose a MacBook if you want the longest battery life, a quiet and premium machine for creative work, coding or general use, and you already use an iPhone. Choose Windows if you need specific Windows-only software, want to game, need more choice at lower prices, or want a laptop you can upgrade and repair cheaply. If you are unsure, list the apps you must use. That usually decides it.

Who Should Buy a MacBook?
- Content creators: video editing in Final Cut or Premiere, music in Logic or GarageBand, and photo editing run smoothly even on a MacBook Air.
- Developers: macOS is popular for web and app development, and it is required for building iPhone apps.
- Students and professionals who move a lot: long battery life and a light, silent design make a real difference on campus or between meetings.
- iPhone users: everything works together without effort.
Who Should Buy a Windows Laptop?
- Engineering, GIS and architecture students: software such as SolidWorks and ArcGIS Pro runs only on Windows.
- Accountants and offices: some accounting and company systems are built for Windows. Check yours before choosing a Mac.
- Gamers: most PC games and anti-cheat systems need Windows.
- Tighter budgets: a refurbished business laptop gives excellent performance for far less than a MacBook.
- People who want touchscreens or 2-in-1 designs: MacBooks do not have touchscreens.

Which MacBook Should You Choose?
- MacBook Air M1 (refurbished): the most affordable modern MacBook. Still fast for school, office and light creative work. Choose 16GB RAM if you can.
- MacBook Air M2 or M3: newer design, brighter screen, MagSafe charging.
- MacBook Air M4 (new): the best Air for long-term use, with 16GB RAM as standard.
- MacBook Pro M1 Pro or newer: for heavy video editing, music production and large coding projects.
Avoid older Intel MacBooks for long-term use. They no longer get the newest macOS versions, and they run hotter with shorter battery life than Apple M-series models.
Can a MacBook Run Windows Programs?
Partly. Apps like Microsoft Office, Zoom, Chrome and most web-based systems (including KRA iTax in the browser) work on a Mac. Some Windows programs can run through tools such as Parallels, but this costs extra, and specialist software, older programs and many games may still not work properly. If a Windows-only app is essential to your work or course, choose Windows.

Questions Buyers Ask
Is a MacBook good for university students in Kenya?
Yes, for most courses such as business, communication, law, medicine and computer science. Engineering, GIS and architecture students should check their software first, because some of it runs only on Windows.
Is a MacBook Air M1 still worth it in 2026?
Yes. It is still fast for school, office work and light creative work, with excellent battery life. Choose the 16GB version if you multitask a lot.
Can I play games on a MacBook?
Only some games. Most popular PC games and anti-cheat systems need Windows. If gaming matters, choose a Windows laptop with NVIDIA RTX graphics.
Can I upgrade RAM on a MacBook?
No. On Apple M-series MacBooks, RAM and storage are fixed, so buy the amount you need from the start.
Are MacBooks more expensive to repair?
Generally yes, because parts cost more. Windows laptop parts are cheaper and easier to find in Nairobi.
Can I use Microsoft Office on a MacBook?
Yes. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams all have Mac versions.
What warranty do MacBooks come with at Fahavi?
New MacBooks come with a 1-year warranty and refurbished MacBooks with a 6-month warranty.
