Buying a laptop should be exciting, not stressful. But with hundreds of models, confusing specs and sellers all claiming the best price, it is easy to end up with the wrong machine.

Before you walk into any shop on Moi Avenue or Luthuli, or click “buy” online, answer these seven questions. They take five minutes and can save you a lot of money and frustration.

Quick Answer: What Should You Know Before Buying a Laptop?

Know what you will use it for, your total budget, how much you will carry it, and the minimum specs that matter: an SSD, at least 8GB RAM (16GB for heavier work), an 8th Gen Intel Core i5 or newer, and a Full HD screen. Then buy from a seller who lets you test it and gives a written warranty and receipt. Everything else comes down to personal preference.

  • ✔ Physical shop in Nairobi CBD
  • ✔ Warranty on every product
  • ✔ Test before you pay
  • ✔ M-Pesa, same-day Nairobi delivery

1. What Will You Use It For?

This decides almost everything. Write down the apps you use daily.

  • School, office and browsing: a mid-range laptop is plenty.
  • Design, video or engineering software: you need more power and possibly dedicated graphics.
  • Gaming: you need an NVIDIA RTX graphics card.
  • Specific software (for example SolidWorks or certain accounting systems): check it runs on your choice, especially if you are considering a MacBook.

2. What Is Your Real Budget?

Include a bag, mouse, Microsoft Office if needed, and delivery. Decide whether you prefer a new laptop with a 1-year warranty or a refurbished business laptop with better specs for the same money.

3. How Much Will You Carry It?

  • Every day (students, field staff): 13 to 14-inch, under about 1.5kg, good battery life.
  • Mostly on a desk: 15.6-inch gives a bigger screen and keyboard with a number pad.

4. Which Specs Actually Matter?

Part Minimum Better
Storage 256GB SSD 512GB SSD
RAM 8GB 16GB
Processor Intel Core i5 8th Gen / Ryzen 5 Core i5 11th Gen or newer / Ryzen 5 5000+
Screen Full HD (1920 x 1080) Full HD IPS or better

Avoid laptops with a hard drive (HDD), 4GB RAM or an HD (1366 x 768) screen. They feel slow and dated from day one.

5. New or Refurbished?

New gives you a fresh battery and a longer warranty. Refurbished business laptops (HP EliteBook, Lenovo ThinkPad, Dell Latitude) give tougher builds and more RAM for the money. Both are good choices if bought from a seller who tests and guarantees them.

6. Can You Test It Before Paying?

A good seller lets you check the laptop first. Confirm the specs in Settings, test the keyboard, screen, battery, ports and camera, and make sure Windows is activated.

7. How Will You Pay, and What Protects You?

  • Pay to an official business till or paybill, not a personal number, and keep the M-Pesa message.
  • Get a receipt with the laptop model and serial number.
  • Get the warranty terms in writing.
  • For delivery, check the laptop on arrival before signing off.

Common Mistakes Nairobi Buyers Make

  • Buying on price alone and getting an old hard drive and 4GB RAM.
  • Paying for a Core i7 or gaming laptop they do not need.
  • Choosing a MacBook without checking their course or work software.
  • Buying from a street seller with no receipt or warranty.
  • Forgetting to check the battery health on a refurbished laptop.

Questions Buyers Ask

What is the minimum laptop spec to buy in 2026?

An SSD, at least 8GB RAM, an Intel Core i5 8th Gen or AMD Ryzen 5 or newer, and a Full HD screen.

Is it better to buy a laptop online or in a shop?

Either is fine with a trusted seller. A physical shop lets you test the laptop before paying. Online, make sure the seller has a real address, a warranty and clear return terms.

How do I avoid laptop scams in Nairobi?

Buy from a seller with a physical shop, pay to an official till or paybill, test the laptop before paying, and get a receipt with the serial number and a written warranty.

Should I buy a 14-inch or 15.6-inch laptop?

14-inch if you carry it often. 15.6-inch if it mostly stays on a desk and you want a bigger screen and number pad.

How much RAM do I need?

8GB for school, office and browsing. 16GB for heavy multitasking, large Excel files, coding or editing.

Do laptops come with Microsoft Office?

Not always. Ask before buying, and budget for a Microsoft 365 subscription if you need it.

Can I get my laptop delivered in Nairobi?

Yes. Fahavi Computers offers same-day delivery within Nairobi and delivery countrywide, with payment by M-Pesa, cash, bank transfer or card.
